Thank You, Lord!!
Everyone turned,
startled to see Andrey hold up hold his letter in his hand as he jumped on his
desk. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
I knew he was an idiot,
one of the ladies whispered to her friend. I mean, look at him! All eyes remain
fixed on Andrey as he kept his arms up, eyes closed and lips muttering. About a
minute later, he opened his eyes to see the Manager staring at him.
Oh…uhm. Sory, sir,
Andrey began, as he scrambled off the desk.
It’s either you are
insane or you are about to be insane, the manager blurted, obviously not
impressed by the young man’s actions or apologies for same. Even if you do not
have any sense of responsibility, learn from people. Look at your colleagues.
They al got the same slip as you did, but you are the only one shouting and
rejoicing about it. You sound like you have always wanted to leave the job.
Ehm…. No sir. I am not
grateful about it. I am not grateful that I lost my job.
Oh, so you really
understand the contents of the letters? You really do know that you just lost
your job?, the manager continued, his eyes widening in disbelief. After a
moment of self recovery, his face contorted into an irritated frown. You should
sit down like an irresponsible child. Your excitement and optimism are
annoying.
Andrey knew it was
futile to continue arguing with the man. He sat back in his seat and began to
gather his stuff. He had given the best of ten years to this company and did
not expect to be let go like this. It wasn’t just him though. The company was
downsizing. About thirty people had been relieved of their employment without
any form of benefits. They were to leave just like that. His boss was too cowardly
to do it himself. He skipped out of town and told the manager to do his dirty
job.
Andrey knew better than to complain. His house rent was due and his wife
was pregnant. He was glad her EDD was still three month away, so they had time
to get another avenue for finances. He slapped his bag shut and made his way
out of the office and then out of the building. He did not look back even once
at the building for which he left his house before 6:00am everyday and from
which he got home late every night. He did not know how he would tell his wife
that the job he dedicated so much effort to had been taken from him without the
benefit of any notice. As he snapped his car seatbelt on, his phone rang. It
was his wife.
Hey, baby….. He put up
his best everything is fine voice.
No sir, it’s me. It
wasn’t his wife after all. It was his neighbor, Katrine.
Okay…. What’s going on?
Sir, your wife is at
the hospital. She’s been bleeding and lost a lot of blood.
Andrey’s head went into
a spin.
No, not today. Not
today!
We need you here now,
sir. It’s crucial.
Beads of perspiration
broke out on his forehead, and his heart raced a hundred times faster than ever
before.
To be
continued on next part………
